Psychology | University of Yangon

The University of Yangon originated in 1920 and the Department of Psychology and Philosophy was one of its earliest faculties. In 1952, these two separated to become two departments; in that year the first Bachelor’s degree course in Psychology was offered. Nowadays the Department of Psychology offers both undergraduate and graduate courses. In 1958, a Masters of Psychology course was offered; in 1999, PhDs in Psychology started; in that year also a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Psychology course was offered; and in 1999, a Post Graduate Diploma in Social Work began.

The Department of Psychology at the University of Yangon seeks to provide an exceptional scholarly and intellectual environment to serve our students, the region, and the professional community of psychology. We will maintain and strengthen our national reputation as we promote new directions of enquiry, new partnerships and programmes that will enhance the professional and academic skills of our students and staff.

Mission

The mission of the Department of Psychology at the University of Yangon is to provide excellent and rigorous training in the science and practice of psychology at both undergraduate and graduate levels. We emphasize both research-based and applied experiences in our curricula, often through individual, staff-guided projects and opportunities. We develop educated individuals who are competitive in both top quality graduate programmes and in the job market.

The creation and dissemination of knowledge and emphasis on critical thinking underlie our teaching and research philosophy. We integrate teaching, research, and practice by involving graduate and undergraduate students in classroom activities, research projects, and field-based experiences. High-quality learning is also reinforced by the integration of technology into the curriculum.

This mission is accomplished through the commitment of an accessible and enthusiastic staff team who are dedicated to high quality teaching, research, and service to the university and community. Staff members challenge themselves as well as their students to increase their knowledge of psychology, be critical evaluators of information, model ethical behaviour, value diversity, and make a positive difference in their field.
